The
Baal Shem Tov, or Besht — the founder of Chasidism —
met the soul of the Messiah during an ascent to heaven.
The Besht asked him, "When will the Master come?"
The Messiah answered, "When your wellsprings break forth to the outside!"
(from a letter
written by the Besht to his brother-in-law about one of his soul ascents)
This nigun for Psalm 23 is a lovely complex alternative to add to your repertoire, alongside the extraordinary and well-loved Modzitzer nigun. Both are deveikes nigunim meant to be sung at seudah shlishit (the end of Shabbat). Meir Rotbard recorded it for me in Los Angeles over a decade ago. He wasn't sure of its origins – please write if you know where it comes from.
